Introduction :

Women empowerment refers to making women more powerful to make them capable of acting and deciding for themselves in their life. Women have suffered a lot through the years at the hands of men. In earlier times they were all ill treated as if all rights belonged to men, even voting. As time passed, women started realizing their power.

As women weren’t allowed to make decisions for themselves, women empowerment was stressed. It made them aware of their rights and realise how they must make their own place in society, rather than depending on men.

Need for women empowerment :

Every country has a history of ill treated women. Women all over the world have struggled a lot to reach the status they have today. While some countries are making progress, India is still lagging behind in women empowerment. In India women empowerment is needed now more than ever. India is amongst the countries which aren’t safe for women. Firstly, women in India face the danger of the so Called ‘honor killing’. Their family members think it’s right to kill them if they bring shame to their family. Moreover, education and freedom are very less here. Women aren’t allowed to pursue higher studies. They are married off early. Men are dominating women. In some places women’s duty is to work for their husband and do household work restlessly. Domestic violence is a very severe crisis in India. Men beat their wife and ill treat them due to dowry problem and property issue. More so, because women are afraid to speak up. Similarly, women are paid less than their male counterparts. I think that is one of the most important reasons why men dominate women in this prudish society.

How to empower women:

Individuals and the government must together make it happen. Education for girls must be made compulsory so that women can become literate to take decisions in their life by themselves. Women must be given equal opportunities in every field irrespective of gender . Moreover, they must also be given equal pay. We can also empower women by abolishing child marriage. Various programmes must be held which can make them stronger. Most importantly, the shame of divorce and abuse must be thrown out of the society. Parents must make their daughters lead a life of perseverance as far as possible and think of divorce only when their sufferings become intolerable.

We should take many women as role models who fought for women’s rights. Women should get educated and stand self reliant. They should know who they are and should know about their rights. They should prove they are not weaker sex in this society.
